A Guide to Marquee Styles from a Professional Wedding Planner

Choosing Your Marquee Style

Opting for a marquee wedding in the UK presents numerous advantages; unparalleled flexibility in terms of location, the ability to create bespoke celebrations in picturesque settings, and customising every detail, from décor to catering. Accommodating weddings of all sizes, marquees provide ample space to create a personalised ambience that reflects the couple's unique style and preferences, embracing the beauty of the outdoors, regardless of the unpredictable British weather.

Today, there are a number of different structures and styles of marquees available in the UK. From major structures to small stretch coverings, their individual benefits depend entirely on factors such as location, available space, and number of guests. Some work better in different spaces, so I’ve put together this guide as a starting point to help you understand the options available.

Grand Pavilion Marquee

The Grand Pavilion Marquee also known as a conservatory style or orangery stands as the epitome of regal charm. With its majestic arches and lavish interiors, it really is the most stunning option. Perfect for those who dream of a wedding exuding timeless elegance, this structure sets the stage for a luxurious and memorable experience.

Clear-Span Framed Marquee

For a contemporary touch, the clear-span framed marquee is the ultimate choice. The transparent walls create a seamless connection between the opulent interior and the natural beauty of your chosen location. This modern marvel allows the surroundings to become part of the décor, offering an unforgettable and sophisticated atmosphere. These are generally built in 3m sections meaning there Is flexibility on the length and also various widths available depending on your space. Often, people assume that Clear Span marquees are completely clear in terms of the walls and ceilings but Clear Span is a term used to define the open spaces between supports. Of course, you can choose to have clear panels for your walls and ceiling.

Tipi

Tipis also known as Kåtas, originate from Sweden and they’re incredibly durable because they’re designed to withstand the elements year-round. The sides are the Giant Hat Tipis can be raised in the summer to admire panoramic views. Create a cosy atmosphere in winter with the sides down, firepits, twinkly lights and reindeer hides. Smaller tipis, known as Kungsörnens are perfect for a cosy, intimate bar area and add a unique space when joined to a series of larger Giant Hat Tipis.

For those seeking a fusion of rustic charm and high-end style, tipis are the answer. These stylish tents create an intimate and exclusive atmosphere, making them perfect for a unique celebration.

Classic Pole Marquee

Often thought of as the ‘quintessentially British’ marquee style, Pole Marquees feature guy ropes, elegant peaked roofs and wooden internal poles. They offer a traditional 'country fair' vibe for a marquee wedding. Internal poles are often dressed with flowers or foliage, or used as a centre point around which to build a circular bar. This kind of structure can only be used on grass.

Stretch Tent

When sheltering your guests from the sun is as important as any other potential ‘feature’ of the Great British Summer, stretch tents are the perfect design to create a modern outdoor vibe for a marquee wedding. They are versatile and can be erected on hard or uneven ground, making them the perfect choice as a separate ceremony or drinks reception area.

Pearl Tent

Pearl Tents are based on a Moghul design and they feature a double roof section which makes them stand taller than other marquees. They have a flat white interior, traditional rope detailing and a heavy-duty canvas exterior.

The Pearl Tent Company offer tents with a modular design that can be configured in different ways, for example with extension areas on the sides, or a veranda at the front. The pyramid top provides a luxurious light and airy atmosphere for a marquee wedding.

Sperry Tent

Sperry or Sailcloth tents are examples of fine American craftsmanship. Designed for fancy events at the Hamptons, or Palm Beach, the canopies of these handsome tents are made from genuine sailcloth. The interior is made up of wooden hand-milled poles which gives a vintage feel (like the traditional pole tent). The high roof offers a luxurious, open feeling and the vintage banner flags look great in photos.

In Summary

I always recommend you seek guidance if your space is a little tricky. For some gardens and venue spaces, whilst you may have ample space for the main structure, you will need to consider the access, drainage (including irrigation systems), elevations and any structural obstacles such as fountains, ponds or flowerbeds. But in short, there is generally always a solution for a marquee structure.
